What are the Three Career Growth Saboteurs, and What Can You Do About Them?

I am still buzzing from our recent training session at the Women’s Fearless Leadership Masterclass. It’s so refreshing and inspiring to work with such an amazing group of high-achieving, talented women who are striving to advance their careers.

Like so many of us, these women face the complexities of navigating corporate environments. But here’s the key: it’s not about capability—it’s about connection and growth. And putting yourself in an environment where your growth abilities are supported and championed makes a world of difference.

When we realize that by sharing and learning together, we elevate each other, we become more resourceful with higher energy, get the support we need, and gain guidance. We don’t have to navigate this journey alone, and it feels so much better this way.

For those who attended the leadership development session and for those who didn’t and are seeking guidance on your next big step, I want to talk about the three most common barriers that often hold us back from reaching our full potential and turning our vision into reality.

It’s never too late to address them, regardless of your age. And once you realize what’s been holding you back, it becomes, mentally, so much easier to take that first step.

What Gets in the Way?

So, what holds us back from actualizing our career visions? Three key saboteurs often come into play.

1. “It’s Not the Right Time”

One of the most common reasons we hold ourselves back is timing.

You might be thinking, “Ginny, this just isn’t the right time for me.” Life can throw a lot our way—personal challenges like a divorce or emotional turmoil can make it feel like career advancement isn’t a priority.

If this is your reality, and you’re going through a rough patch, please give yourself grace. These personal challenges can make career opportunities seem secondary. Understand that this, too, shall pass, and when you’re ready, the opportunities will still be there waiting for you.

Until then, trust in the process and have faith that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You will feel ready to re-prioritize your career advancement and related goals when this situation eases.

2. “I Don’t Have the Time or Money”

You might believe you don’t have the time or money to invest in your professional development.

I understand this all too well. When I made the decision to launch my own business at 47, after 26 years in corporate, it was a huge leap. But I knew I had to make it work for the sake of my family and my vision.

Here’s the thing… when you invest in your professional development, you invest in your future well-being. You need to give yourself the time, effort, and money you put into others in order to really prioritize yourself and your growth.

Take a close look at your financial situation and schedule. What can you cut back on? How can you shift your priorities? Sometimes, it’s about getting creative and finding ways to invest in yourself that pay off in unexpected ways.

Similarly, carving out time for personal growth is critical. You need time to strategize, reflect, and plan your next steps. Your time is valuable, and so are you.

3. “Will It Work for Me?”

The third obstacle is doubt. People often ask, “Will this work for me?” However, what that question really means is, “Will I work?

If you’ve struggled with completing initiatives in the past, ask yourself what will be different this time.

Additionally, look to others in the position you want to see yourself in. Use their growth as inspiration. The success you see in others isn’t about luck or magic; it’s about consistency, structure, and commitment.

Surrounding yourself with the right people, tools, and guidance is crucial. Create a structure of support, like mentors and peers, to keep you accountable and motivated.

Shifting Priorities and Taking Action

If you don’t prioritize yourself, ask yourself, “What’s the cost?” Instead of thinking, “I don’t have the time or money…” you must think to yourself, “How can I make it happen?”

Once you recognize these patterns, you can begin to shift your approach. Any pattern you continue to follow is a choice

To be the leader your senior management needs, you must develop crucial skills like powerful communication, influence, and innovative problem-solving. These traits are not developed by accident but through intentional investment in your growth.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time or doubting whether you’re worth the investment, I urge you to take a single step forward. Once you create your vision and take the first step, the following steps will begin to unfold naturally.

As someone who has walked this path and continues to grow with the support of mentors and a community, I can tell you that it’s possible to build the career and life you envision. You don’t have to do it alone. If not now, when?

If you find it challenging to implement these practices, know that you are not alone. In our Women’s Fearless Leadership Masterclass, I further explore these concepts. Visit our Events page to learn about our next masterclass.
