Hello, and welcome! As we close out the year, I want to take this opportunity to talk about something that has profoundly shaped my journey—seeking support. Over the years, leaning into support has helped me become a better leader, coach, mentor, and mother. Today, I want to share how identifying and seeking the right support can transform both your career and your organization.
Identifying Areas for Support
Let’s start by asking: Where do you or your organization need support? Leaders in fields like financial services, technology, and STEM are often so focused on delivering results, satisfying clients, and driving innovation that they overlook where their teams—or even they themselves—could benefit from additional resources.
For organizational leaders, this could mean assessing whether your team lacks resources, thought leadership, or tools to develop talent effectively.
For individuals, I recommend taking a step back and looking at your life through the lens of the Wheel of Life. This tool allows you to evaluate your satisfaction across various areas of your life, such as your career, personal growth, relationships, and health. Ask yourself:
How satisfied am I with where I am today?
In what areas do I feel stretched too thin or areas I’d like to grow?
Another practical tool is a SWOT Analysis, which stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Many ExecutiveBound community members indicate they know how to use this professionally; however, they never thought about using it personally. I highly recommend it.
Let’s say you’re aiming for a promotion or trying to close a leadership gap within your team. Start by identifying your strengths that align with the role or goal. Then, take an honest look at your weaknesses or skill gaps. What opportunities could you seize to grow, and what potential threats might hold you back? A SWOT analysis gives you clarity and direction, allowing you to pinpoint precisely where you need to seek support.
The ROI of Seeking Support
Now, let’s discuss the return on investment when you or your organization seek support. Imagine receiving the help you need—whether through leadership development programs, mentorship, or additional resources.
What changes?
How does this help accelerate your growth or enhance your team’s performance?
For individuals, this might mean building the skills you need to get that next promotion or increasing your confidence to tackle more significant responsibilities.
For organizations, supporting your leaders can create engaged, productive teams. According to Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace report, disengaged teams cost the global economy $8.8 trillion annually. On the flip side, organizations with highly engaged teams see 23% higher profitability. The ROI is clear—support leads to better outcomes for individuals and organizations alike.
Overcoming Barriers to Seeking Support
If the benefits of support are so obvious, what’s preventing us from seeking it? For many of us, the barriers are internal. We may hesitate to invest time, effort, or resources. Or we may feel like we should figure everything out on our own. Sound familiar?
Here’s the reality: the cost of staying stagnant is often far greater than the cost of seeking support. Staying in the same place—whether it’s as an individual or as an organization—can mean missed opportunities, stagnant growth, and lower engagement. This often comes down to mindset. As Carol Dweck highlights in her bookMindset: The New Psychology of Success, a fixed mindset keeps us stuck, while a growth mindset empowers us to seek help and move forward.
