I’m so grateful to feel inspired week after week by the insights and guidance I receive in the different communities I’m a part of and with my mentors. This week, I want to share with you some inspirations I’ve received on how to dive deeper into the concept of transformation – and how we can harness its power for transformative leadership and unprecedented personal and professional growth.
Embracing the Journey of Transformation
One of my mentors reminded me this week that transformation doesn’t happen overnight.
I’ve experienced this firsthand. When I look back at my journey of personal and professional transformation starting in 2000, I can see how dramatically I’ve evolved over the past 24 years.
Every year of my personal transformation has brought me to a new level of self-awareness. I have grown to understand my strengths, areas of opportunity, fears, struggles, and so much more.
And they morph every single year. I am so much more aware of how I show up in every single area of my life—my professional life, my family life, and my relationship with myself.
As I’ve become more conscious of how I show up each day, I have found that the communities we belong to play a crucial role in our growth.
Surrounding yourself with the right environment is critical. If you find yourself stuck in negativity or constantly focusing on bad news, it’s a sign that you need an environment that will nourish your creativity, excitement, and collaboration.
I encourage you to seek out environments that support your growth and development. The effort you put into finding a community that elevates you is an investment in your well-being, your future, and your career.
How we show up in private spaces and business environments is correlated because we are the common denominator wherever we go.
Leading with a Growth Mindset
If you aim to advance as a leader but feel like a salmon swimming upstream, this is a sign that it’s time to seek proximity to other growth-minded individuals.
Organizations, too, must ensure that their leaders are continuously evolving. We must be consistently asking, “How are our leaders transforming? How are they growing?” And if they’re not, reflect on what’s getting in the way of them doing so.
Identifying and addressing obstacles that hinder growth is crucial because, without growth-focused leaders, the organization will likely struggle in every area. Your people and talent constantly evolve, and your leaders should reflect this.
As senior leaders, if we don’t recognize where we’re stuck in our thinking and evolve, we risk falling behind and losing our ability to be visionaries for our organizations. While startups thrive on agility and forward-thinking, more mature companies often face more significant challenges in fostering leadership transformation—and leaders should be able to adapt to these specific circumstances.
Whether you’re an individual or a senior people leader, remember that transformation takes time. However, taking deliberate action today is crucial. Evaluate how you are evolving as a leader and ensure you are keeping pace with market changes, technology, and the needs of your customers and stakeholders.
I invite you to evaluate the current state of your organization.
Are you satisfied with the rate at which your leaders are growing and evolving?
If you find that they’re not adapting in a way that would be most beneficial to your company, let’s connect—we can support you with that.
Celebrating Wins and Embracing Gratitude
One of the most essential practices in this growth journey is celebrating small wins. It’s like stopping at a gas station for a refuel or breathing clean air in the mountains. Celebrating these wins helps us understand what is working and counteracts our brain’s “negativity bias”—the tendency to focus on problems and stack them up to generate disastrous thinking. The more we celebrate wins, the more diligent we become at rewiring our brains against this bias.
As we practice the habit of doing this for ourselves, we learn to recognize and appreciate our teams’ efforts.
Thinking realistically, our teams are running on all engines—stretched thin, doing more with fewer resources. They consistently work toward efficiency despite budget cuts and other restrictions from the top. In these high-pressure environments where resources are scarce, acknowledging and celebrating small victories keeps us motivated and resilient.
When we learn to stop and appreciate what is working while focusing on the company’s vision, we increase our energetic state while taking care of business. In our community, this is what we call the gratitude practice—and it’s integral in ensuring high performance while recognizing the need for rest and reflection.
This gratitude practice allows us to enjoy the journey continuously. Over 30 years of experience in business, I’ve realized that there is no destination. Everything is about the journey–how we feel and who we become is what makes the end-result most precious. That’s why we must celebrate with our teams, acknowledge each other, support one another, and provide the resources needed to thrive. When someone needs help, let’s be there to offer it.
