I want to acknowledge that many of us have faced incredibly tough times over the past 12 to 24 months, personally or professionally. Be it through challenges in your organization or family, we’re all dealing with something at some point.
You are not alone. As you navigate this journey, remember, “This too shall pass.” This is my first message to you at the beginning of the year. Sometimes, it feels like there’s no end in sight, but trust me, there is. I encourage you to bring your faith, hope, and willingness to expect good things to happen into this new season, this new chapter of your life and career.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Dr. Ginny Baro, and I am a transformational speaker, leadership coach, career strategist, and #1 best-selling author. My biggest pleasure in my career is serving organizations, women, and leaders looking to develop critical leadership skills, build high-performing teams, and infuse well-being into workplaces.
Creating an Aligned and Fulfilling Career
A personal strength of mine is connectedness. I have a strong belief that everything is connected.
Therefore, I believe that everyone benefits when leaders operate from a place of love, empathy, empowerment, and passion.
You may think using the word “love” in the workplace is too strong, but I guarantee you that if you reflect on the best years of your career, or when your team was thriving, three specific elements were most likely present:
Great People: You were surrounded by inspiring individuals who elevated your work and colleagues with whom you were excited to work daily. Team members supported each other.
Passionate Work: You were engaged in work that interested you and aligned with your strengths, allowing you to achieve great outcomes (because when we’re leveraging our unique talents, we bring our best work to the table and enjoy it). Team members leveraged their strengths.
Alignment: Your work aligned with your personal vision—either as a step toward your ultimate vision or as the work you were passionate about. The team felt purposeful and focused.
Combining these three components that make up your ideal work environment allows us to reflect on how we feel about the work we are doing now.
Here are 3 simple yet transformative questions to reset your leadership path:
How are the relationships around you? Do you feel supported or isolated?
Are you engaged in work that excites you and leverages your strengths, allowing you to perform at your best?
Is your work aligned with your unique value proposition and vision?
If you feel positive about your responses to these three questions, congratulations. And if you find misalignment, that’s okay—this reflection is your starting point.
Developing Leadership Skills and Building Bridges
What can you bring into your life and career to become more aligned?
Think about what kind of work resonates with your strengths and how you can build a bridge to get there.
For example, perhaps you’d like to advance your career and become a senior leader. If this is the case, identify the current gaps.
What must you further develop to get to this point?
Here are a few pathways you can take:
Educational Programs: There are many different programs at universities that focus on leadership skills—both soft and hard skills.
Coaching: Engage in one-on-one coaching with an executive or leadership coach to target specific areas for development for an approach that’s more intimate and tailored to your specific needs.
For example, one of my clients wants to improve her public speaking, while others aim to increase their influence and navigate workplace politics more effectively.
Let’s face it—politics are everywhere. The key is managing personalities, communicating your vision, and building relationships with stakeholders who can help you deliver results. This requires honing our negotiation and influence skills. Every leadership conversation is a negotiation where you consider everyone’s perspective—yours, theirs, and the stakeholders—and find a solution that works for all.
Mastermind Groups: Particularly for us women, it would be beneficial to join a mastermind with other growth-minded leaders who are also looking to develop critical leadership skills. As women, we don’t do well in isolation, and we learn and perform very well in environments where we can openly ask for help, and receive and provide support to others on a similar journey.
Developing critical leadership skills is essential to advance and grow your career and teams. My specialty is helping leaders grow their skills and careers to become empowered, inspiring leaders who also empower their teams and drive their organization’s vision while prioritizing filling their cups first.
