During our last Women’s Fearless Leadership Masterclass, as I addressed over 80 talented women, I delved into four keys to driving career growth and advancement.
Today, I’m sharing Key #1: Own your vision and unique value from an individual and organizational context. I discovered the four after spending more than 30 years in business. My intention in sharing Key #1 is to encourage you to understand your vision and own your unique potential.
Know Thy Unique Value Proposition (UVP)
Understanding your unique value proposition (UVP) is not just pivotal, it’s strategic. Your UVP encompasses your marketable skills, your ‘why,’ and the superpowers that set you apart from your peers. Whether you’re an individual or a senior leader acting on behalf of your organization, leveraging your UVP and unique traits can help you not just impact your environment but shape it.
For individuals, grasping and articulating your unique contributions can transform your professional trajectory. As you recognize what you uniquely bring to your work environment, you begin to see where you can leverage this value most effectively.
For instance, let’s say your strengths lie in driving projects to completion, inspiring teamwork, and strategic thinking. Identifying these traits allows you to position yourself as an integral asset within your organization. You can leverage these skills to lead a high-impact project, foster collaboration among your team members, or contribute to strategic decision-making.
On an organizational level, your UVP can be a powerful tool to differentiate your business in the marketplace. Organizations’ departments can primarily utilize their unique roles to drive company-wide success. Understanding and showcasing your UVP is critical whether you are a support function or a revenue-generating arm of the business. When senior leaders can articulate their department’s contributions in the context of the big picture, it aids in advocating for resources, driving initiatives, and aligning team efforts toward a common goal.
Articulate Your Vision
The other side of the coin in Key #1 is your compelling vision—seeing an exciting future and articulating it clearly. As a leader, conveying your vision helps align your team, fostering a shared understanding and purpose. When your team understands the “Why” behind their efforts, it brings clarity and focus, making them more committed and motivated.
Having a vision isn’t confined to leadership roles alone; it is equally crucial for individuals. Throughout my career, particularly now as I lead my own businesses, Fearless Women @ Work and ExecutiveBound, maintaining a clear vision for how I wish to contribute to my clients and partners and supporting Fortune 500 companies has been vital. This vision provides a roadmap, ensuring every action I take is a step toward my ultimate goals.
A practical tool I use from my mentor, Fabienne Fredrickson, is a simple yet powerful question: “How is what I am doing right now moving me measurably closer to my vision or goal?” As a form of self-reflection, this question keeps me accountable and ensures I am not just busy but productive in meaningful ways.
Create Consistency
One of the biggest hurdles many of us professionals face is a lack of consistency. It’s easy to get excited about new ideas, but the challenge lies in maintaining momentum and seeing projects or your career goals through to completion. Being mindful of how you present yourself and lead your team is crucial as a leader. Sharing your vision and aligning your team to that vision can keep the momentum going. Clarity in purpose fosters a sense of urgency, creativity, and drive to accomplish set goals. It also helps you create built-in accountability and a sense of belonging.
Without this alignment on vision and goals, teams can feel like hamsters on a wheel – busy but directionless, and even sadly, hopeless or discouraged. Clear communication about vision and value can transform how a team functions, bringing everyone on the same page and driving collective success.
Practical Steps to Own Your Vision and Value
If you resonate with these concepts and believe they can benefit you, consider taking practical steps to hone your vision and UVP.
One effective method is to leverage tools and exercises designed to help individuals and organizations crystallize their goals and values. These can significantly enhance collaboration, boost employee satisfaction, and increase productivity.
Whether striving for personal career growth or organizational success, owning your vision and unique value is critical. It aligns your efforts, fuels your motivation, and directs your resources toward meaningful accomplishments. Let’s embrace our unique paths confidently and clearly, poised for continual growth and impactful contributions in our respective fields.
