How to Keep Your Remote Control and Maintain Your Personal Power

by | Jun 12, 2024

Losing our center over the demands of our professional and personal demands is all too common.

The constant influx of tasks, emails, and expectations can easily overwhelm even the organization Rockstars amongst us.

However, it’s crucial to shift into a belief  that maintaining your sense of groundedness as we strive and toil throughout the days, months, and quarters is within your grasp.

Today, I share three essential strategies to help you take back your remote control and maintain your personal power.

1. Respond vs. React

One of the foundational strategies for reclaiming your power is learning to respond rather than react. Reacting is an immediate, often emotional response to a situation and usually doesn’t serve us well.

I recently shared with our talented Fearless Leaders in our mastermind session the importance of becoming more self-aware and emotionally intelligent.

When we respond instead of reacting, we have time to process our emotions and choose a more constructive reaction.

Responding means acknowledging when you’re feeling triggered—whether by a colleague’s oversight or a client’s unreasonable demand—and “deciding” to stay calm and objective.

Living in a reactive state often tarnishes our personal brand and prevents us from being the empathetic, patient individuals we strive to be.

By responding thoughtfully, we maintain our composure and, thereby, our power— to influence the outcomes we are looking for. The key here is self-awareness: noticing the trigger, pausing, and then resetting your approach.

2. Safeguard Your Time with Healthy Boundaries

Another way to reclaim your remote control is by creating and maintaining healthy boundaries around your time.

I am guilty as charged.  For high performers like us, the temptation to be available 24/7 is strong. Whether it’s because of our Type A personalities or the drive to exceed expectations, we often blur the lines between work and personal time. Even when I set my calendar to finish the day by a certain time, I often blow through those. Does this happen to you?

To maintain personal power, it’s crucial to define clear boundaries. This means establishing specific start and end times for your workday and communicating these with your team and manager.

Often, the expectations we believe others have of us are self-imposed. Open communication helps set realistic boundaries that everyone can respect.

Setting these boundaries isn’t about shirking responsibilities; it’s about making room for restoration and refueling. When we ignore this need, we often perpetuate a cycle of anxiety and stress, which can negatively impact not just us but everyone around us.

Safeguarding your personal time enhances your ability to perform better and with more intent when you’re working on professional or home projects.

3. Celebrate Your Accomplishments

Last but certainly not least, celebrating your accomplishments is a vital part of holding onto your remote control.

It’s easy to get caught up in the grind and forget to acknowledge the milestones you reach along the way. By celebrating your wins, big and small, you reinforce your values and accomplishments to yourself and others.

Celebration can be private or within your team, with your manager, or with a broader network. Sharing your successes not only validates your hard work but also boosts morale and positive energy within your organization. This practice fosters a culture of recognition and appreciation, which can be contagious.

Never underestimate the power of a positive energy boost. People are naturally drawn to enthusiasm and joy, and by celebrating your accomplishments, you’re spreading that positive vibe. It’s about taking control of your narrative and not waiting for external validation. If you don’t celebrate your achievements, who will?

How Implementing These Strategies Will Keep You Grounded and Connected

The essence of reclaiming your remote control lies in grounding yourself, maintaining peace, and showing up as your best self. By responding rather than reacting, creating strong boundaries, and celebrating your victories, you create a harmonious balance between your personal and professional life.

This journey isn’t just about high performance; it’s about living with purpose and joy. Consistently applying these strategies helps you stay grounded and confident, enabling progress toward your goals and leadership vision.
